When my daughter went through a phase of being sca When my daughter went through a phase of being scared of the dark, I checked out several books from our library to help her overcome her fear. Unfortunately, we found that many of the books made her even more afraid. I wish we could have read SCARED OF THE DARK? IT’S REALLY SCARED OF YOU. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This amusing book brings life to the dark by personifying it as a shadowy blob who has likes and dislikes and, most of all, feelings. By representing the dark with personal traits, children see it as a nonthreatening friend instead of something scary. Giving the dark its own fear of the light and children further creates a comical role reversal that provides children with the confidence to face the dark each night. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is an entertaining story that should also help children battling a fear of the dark. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Don’t miss SCARED OF THE DARK? I was immediately intrigued by the cover of this b I was immediately intrigued by the cover of this book and was blown away by the poignant story I found inside. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When three cousins visit their grandmother for a summer, they discover an old house that appears to be abandoned. The children boldly approach the house, but rush away when they see a ghostly image in the window. The next day they return with their grandmother and meet Mr. Peterson, an elderly man who kindly invites them in and shares stories from his youth. A sweet friendship is formed and the children visit Mr. Peterson often over the summer. One day, they find he has been moved to a nursing home and the house is condemned. While they couldn’t save his home, they create a memory box of drawings, pictures, and small items from the garden to share with Mr. Peterson. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This touching intergenerational friendship story brings tears to my eyes every time I read it. Beautiful inside and out, it eloquently reminds readers of the dangers of making assumptions and encourages them to look past appearances to make meaningful connections. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ With realistic characters that exhibit empathy and kindness and a storyline that inspires children to find the beauty around them, I highly recommend this special story. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Don’t miss THE HOUSE AT THE END OF THE ROAD by Kari Rust @rustikar; published by Owlkids Publishing @owlkidspublishing, 2019

I LOVE fairy tales, but when I started sharing the I LOVE fairy tales, but when I started sharing them with my children, I found them a bit gruesome. The IT’S NOT A FAIRY TALE series takes traditional tales and puts a comical modern twist on them that breathes new life into these classic stories. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When an unseen narrator attempts to tell the story of Little Red Riding Hood, he is interrupted by each character questioning the plot of the story. The results are absolutely hilarious. The narrator grows more and more frustrated as nothing goes according to plan. Little Red’s cape rips, so she has to wear blue and funniest of all, Captain Hook fills in for the wolf when the villain calls out sick. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The expressive illustrations add to the humor and children will love searching for the myriad of fairy tale characters hidden in the pictures. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My kids are literally obsessed with this series and I highly recommend it to fans of funny books! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Look out for IT’S NOT LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD by Josh Funk @joshfunkbooks; illustrated by Edwardian Taylor @edwardiantaylor; published by Two Lions @amazonpublishing on OCTOBER 27th. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A big thank you to @blue_slip_media for sharing this humorous story with our family in exchange for an honest review. When I was a school librarian, I always started of When I was a school librarian, I always started off the school year sharing a story that celebrates books to excite students about reading. I loved peaking the interest of even the most reluctant of readers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I truly believe that J.K. Rowling’s quote stating, “If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book” is accurate. RONAN THE LIBRARIAN encompasses this sentiment demonstrating that even the fiercest of barbarians can love to read with the right story. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ronan is a mighty barbarian who enjoys invading, raiding, and trading. When he pillages a trunk full of books, however, it appears that he has gathered more trash than treasure. As he ponders what to do with the worthless loot, a picture catches his eye and immediately draws him into a surprisingly exciting story. After a long day of school, one of my children’s After a long day of school, one of my children’s favorite activities is enjoying a story and a snack. They usually prefer funny books to help them relax and they have requested ON ACCOUNT OF THE GUM every day this week! This hysterical book makes me laugh out loud each time I read it, so I don’t mind at all! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When a child wakes up with gum in their hair, family members offer up comical solutions for dislodging it that end with disastrous results. With each turn of the page, the story gets funnier and funnier ending with a sidesplitting punch line that makes our family giggle no matter how many times we’ve read this story. Friendships can be hard to navigate, especially fo Friendships can be hard to navigate, especially for young children. CAN I PLAY TOO? is an engaging read aloud that cleverly teaches children the importance of social cues and helps them develop their social-emotional skills. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When a boy asks to help his classmate build a train track, he excitedly begins constructing it the way he envisions, not noticing that the other boy is becoming upset at the way he is taking over the project. When the other child storms off claiming that he ruined his track, the boy is left sad and confused. The attentive teacher helps him recognize warning signs that a friend might feel frustrated and arms him with the language to find out what is wrong. The next time the boys play together and a problem arises, they are able to work it out and enjoy their time together. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While this story is aimed at children with sensory sensitivities, with its theme of empathy, collaboration, and sharing, it has wide appeal and many readers will relate to the children in this book. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ CAN I PLAY TOO? is the third installment of Samantha Cotterill’s LITTLE SENSES series and I highly recommend checking out the other books NOPE.
